Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply for a building permit?
To apply for a permit, follow these three steps:
- Get the Forms: Download the application from the section below or pick one up at the Town Office.
- Submit Documentation: Turn in your completed form along with a site plan, construction drawings, and proof of insurance (or a BP-1 exemption form) to the Building & Zoning Department
- Review & Pay: Once the Code Enforcement Officer approves your plans, you will be notified to pay the permit fee and collect your placard.
Note: All applications must be submitted to the Town Office at 4424 Old Bath Road, Barrington NY. For specific questions on whether your project requires a permit, call 607-243-5323
What kind of work does not require a building permit?
In the Town of Barrington, ordinary repairs and maintenance that do not involve structural changes generally do require a permit.
Common examples include:
Cosmetic Updates: Painting, wallpapering, tiling, and carpeting.
Landscaping: Planting trees, installing small garden paths, or low-profile retaining walls.
Minor Repairs: Replacing a faucet, fixing existing siding, or replacing a window of the same size.
Small Structures: One-story detached tool or storage sheds (typically under 144 square feet), though zoning setbacks still apply.
What happens after a building permit is issued?
After your permit is issued and the fee is paid, you’ll need to post the permit placard in a visible spot on your property before starting construction.
As work progresses, you are responsible for calling the Town at 607-243-5323 to schedule inspections at specific milestones, such as footings, framing, and electrical, before any work is covered up.
Once the project is finished and passes its final inspection, the Building Department will issue your Certificate of Occupancy or Compliance, officially closing out the permit.
