Frequently Asked Questions
What services does this department provide?
The Highway Department handles the year-round maintenance and safety of our local roads. This includes seasonal tasks like snow plowing and ice control in the winter, as well as routine road repairs, paving, and pothole patching during the warmer months. They are also responsible for clearing roadside brush, maintaining drainage ditches and culverts to prevent flooding, and ensuring all town road signage is properly installed and visible. If you notice a hazardous road condition or a downed tree blocking a town right-of-way, this is the department to contact.
When does my road get plowed?
Roads are plowed on a priority basis to ensure emergency routes and main thoroughfares are cleared first, followed by secondary roads. Our Highway Department typically begins operations as soon as snow accumulation reaches a depth that affects safe travel or when icing begins. While the crew works as quickly as possible to reach every town road, factors like heavy snowfall rates and limited visibility can impact timing. Please remember to keep vehicles and trash bins off the road during storms to help the plows clear the area safely and efficiently.
How do I report a pothole?
Send an email to the address on this page and we will get it resolved.
What are the steps to get a culvert installed?
To get a culvert installed on your property, your first step is to contact us directly to schedule an on-site consultation. A department representative will visit your property to determine the correct size and placement of the pipe to ensure proper drainage and prevent road washouts. After the assessment, the town will provide you with the specific dimensions and materials required- typically, the homeowner is responsible for purchasing the culvert pipe itself, while the town handles the actual installation to ensure it meets safety and environmental standards. Once you have the pipe delivered to your site, notify us so they can put you on the schedule for the installation.
